What happened

A committee reviewed proposed policy changes that would bar LCPS from requesting or collecting a student’s or parent’s immigration or citizenship status except when required by law. Related revisions would keep that status out of directory information and prohibit staff and school resource officers from threatening to disclose it; the committee has not adopted the changes.

Why it matters to families

The proposed rules would formalize safeguards affecting student enrollment and the handling of family information across LCPS. Staff said Virginia law requires school divisions to implement compliant policies and procedures by December 31, 2026.

The evidence

At its October 28 Legislative and Policy Committee meeting, LCPS staff presented draft changes to Policies 8115 and 8125, including the restriction on requesting or collecting immigration-status information, and Policy 8640, including limits on directory information and threats to disclose status. The discussion described the language as proposed and tied it to Virginia Code §22.1-2.2; the committee did not adopt the policy revisions at this meeting.
