How North Vermillion is paid for and who decides

A small two-school corporation taking on new bond debt for building work

North Vermillion Community School Corporation runs an elementary school and a junior/senior high school near Cayuga in Vermillion County, Indiana. As in other Indiana corporations, classroom costs come mostly from state tuition support (the Education Fund), while local property taxes pay for operations, transportation, buildings and debt. In 2026 the board started a bond-financed renovation project and adopted a 2027 budget with a sharply higher debt service levy. Seven elected trustees set the budget and policy and hire the superintendent, Brian Byrum.

Bond project

In August and September 2026 the board approved a project, preliminary and final bond resolutions for renovation, safety, technology and bus purchases across the corporation. The amount was not posted.

2027 property taxes

The budget notice allows up to $4,213,792 in levies, up from $3,573,048. The debt service maximum levy rises 39.94%.

Cash flow

In April 2026 the board borrowed short-term through an Indiana Bond Bank tax anticipation warrant because 2025 property tax money arrived late.

Who decides

Seven trustees: President Sadie Paige, Vice President Joan Hathaway, Secretary Jason McLain, John Bean, Brian Hughes, Steve Russell and Brandon Thomann.

Minutes record motions and votes but not dollar amounts for the bond, the teacher contract or the early retirement incentive.
